Definition of XRP6258

An orally active, semi-synthetic derivative of the natural taxoid 10-deacetylbaccatin III, with potential antineoplastic activity. XRP6258 binds to and stabilizes tubulin, thereby preventing microtubule depolymerization. This prevents cellular division, leading to cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and eventually inhibiting cellular proliferation. Unlike other taxane compounds, XRP6258 is a poor substrate for the multiple-drug resistance (MDR) membrane-associated P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump and may be useful for treating MDR tumors. In addition, XRP6258 is capable of penetrating the blood brain barrier.
